"A Young Black King Can Be Anything": Why I Wrote This Book for My Son—And Yours

There’s a moment every parent has when they realize…Their child is watching the world. And the world doesn’t always reflect what they’re capable of.

My son was 8 when he told me he wanted to be the 52nd President of the United States. Not an athlete. Not a YouTuber. The president. And he said it with his whole chest — like he already saw himself in the White House.

That moment stopped me in my tracks.

Because even though I’ve always poured confidence into him, I also knew that the world wouldn’t always do the same. That the world might try to shrink him before he ever has a chance to grow into his greatness. And I wasn’t having it.

So, I wrote him a book.

A Young Black King Can Be Anything 

It is a children’s book that celebrates different career possibilities. It tells Young Black Kings that no dream is off-limits. That yes, you can be a pilot. A chef. An astronaut. Even the president. All of it. Any of it.

And you don’t have to be perfect. You just have to believe and work hard.

I believe in representation. I believe in affirmations. And I believe that when a child sees themselves on the page, they start to believe in the life they can create for themselves.

Former President Barack Obama showed my son that his dream was real. I wrote this book to remind him — and every Young Black King — that he doesn't have to shrink to fit into a world that wasn’t built for him. He can build his own.
